Joel P. Schaefer, CFA

Joel joined AFL Investments in 2014. He has an extensive investment background with over twenty years of direct investment experience as well as having served in a senior capacity within the industry. He is responsible for all segments of the investment business including execution of the strategic plan and management of discretionary accounts for high net worth clients, institutions and foundations.

Joel earned his Chartered Financial Analyst® designation in 1997 and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Wesleyan University. Prior to joining AFL, Joel managed the private investments of a European family. Joel was the president and CEO of Capital G Investments Ltd. for ten years where he established the investment process of the company, and was responsible for the growth, regulatory compliance and profitability of the business. Professional affiliations include the CFA Society of Bermuda and the Institute of Directors.

Joel, a Bermudian, enjoys married life with three children. He is actively involved in the community. He serves on the investment committees of the Bermuda High School for Girls and the Bermuda Hotel Pension Fund. He also serves on the Listing Committee of the Bermuda Stock Exchange. Joel enjoys fitness and water-sports.

Simon joined AFL Investments in September 2014. As well as working with AFL’s clients, Simon has day to day oversight of The Argus Group investment portfolio. Prior to joining AFL, he worked for five years at Gray Philanthropies Limited and Orbis Investment Management Limited in a family office role advising the Chairman. Previously, Simon worked at HSBC Bermuda and its predecessor, Bank of Bermuda, for 11 years in a variety of client-facing roles dealing with High Net Worth and Institutional Clients. His final role at HSBC was on a secondment to the New York office of HSBC Global Asset Management in the capacity of Head of Client Services.

Simon holds a BA (Hons) degree in Law and Accounting from Kingston University and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from The College of Law, Guildford. Simon is a CFA® charter holder and member of the Bermuda CFA Society. Additionally, Simon holds the Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) professional designation.

Simon, a Bermudian, is married, with a son and a daughter. He is a fitness enthusiast and an avid Bridge player, having served on the local board of the American Contract Bridge League for five years.

Louis joined AFL Investments in October 2007. He previously worked as an Analyst at Cidel in Barbados where he gained extensive knowledge and experience in banking, investment administration and fund management. Prior to joining Cidel in January 2006, he worked for several years as an Examiner with the Bank Supervision Department of the Central Bank of Barbados. Core responsibilities included bank surveillance and regulation.

Louis holds a BSc. (Hons) in Economics and Accounting from the University of the West Indies in Barbados, and a MSc. (Distinction) in Banking and International Finance from the Cass Business School, City University in London. Louis is a CFA® charter holder and is a member of the Bermuda CFA Society. He is also a certified accountant, being a member of CPA British Columbia and Bermuda.

Louis is married and enjoys basketball, golf and travelling and has an interest in art and photography.

Julie joined AFL as a Wealth Manager in September 2014. Julie brings to the team extensive industry and client servicing experience from the financial and regulatory sectors. She is primarily responsible for client services at AFL.

Prior to joining AFL, Julie worked in a marketing and business development role for 2 years, in education and training at the Bermuda Insurance Institute for 8 years and also served as Head of Insurance for the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA) for 9 years. Prior to the BMA, she was an Officer at Bank of Bermuda, the predecessor to HSBC Bank Bermuda, where she worked in various departments in positions of increasing responsibility for 12 years.

Julie, a Bermudian, has a Master’s Degree in Management and Human Relations from Webster University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Psychology from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Julie holds the CFA Investment Foundation Certificate.

Julie is married and enjoys all types of outdoor activities and travelling.

David joined AFL Investments in June 2015. Prior to joining AFL, he worked for Argus as both a Research Analyst and Group Benefits Underwriter. Before joining Argus, David worked for Sun Life Financial at their U.S. Headquarters in Massachusetts, having spent the better part of a decade living and working in the Boston area. In his current role David supports the investment team through financial analysis of market developments, due diligence and compliance with guidelines. He is also responsible for the production of scheduled and bespoke reports showing how movements in the financial markets affect The Argus Group’s portfolio of investments.

David holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Canada, and is currently a level 3 candidate working toward his CFA® designation.

David, a Bermudian, is married and enjoys spending time outdoors. On any given weekend you can find him on the beach, playing tennis, sailing or SCUBA diving. He is also slightly obsessed with ridding the local waters of the invasive lionfish.

Angela joined AFL in June 2016, bringing to the team an extensive background in both banking and adult education. Prior to joining AFL, her banking career spanned 30 years, which included 15 years at Bank of Bermuda Limited. She recently held the position of Senior Business Analyst at HSBC Bermuda Limited, where she implemented and embedded regulated Customer Due Diligence requirements to the Bank’s Global standards. Prior to this role she worked in the capacity as the Senior Vice President, Banking Operations at Capital G Bank Limited. Her initial career in banking led to the position of Assistant Vice President responsible for managing the Bank of Bermuda’s mutual fund Service Desk.

Angela’s parallel career in adult education includes: Working as the Head of Training for the Government of Bermuda and delivering workshops in professional and personal development from the Franklin Covey suite of course work, both within Bank of Bermuda Limited as well as independently.

Angela holds a Master’s degree in Management Science from Boston University as well as a Bachelor of Art’s degree in Psychology from Mount Saint Vincent University in Canada. Additionally, she holds a master certification in Training and Facilitation from Friesen Kay and Associates of Canada, and a designation in Risk Management from the Institute of Risk Management in the UK.

Angela has an active family life with her three sons. She has recently stepped down after serving for four years on the Board of Directors of the Bermuda Center Against Abuse and continues to work actively in the community for charitable causes. She is a member of both a voice and bell choir. She loves dance and the arts, having performed both locally and abroad.

Sara joined AFL Investments in January 2014. She brings to the team a wealth of customer relationship and executive administrative experience from several industries which include: Investments, real estate finance, marketing and the not-for-profit sector. Before joining AFL Sara was the Capital Campaign Co-ordinator for the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. This position not only required strong organisational skills, but also the ability to communicate the Museum’s ethos passionately and effectively to donors and visitors. Prior to working for the Museum, she was the Executive Assistant to the Head of a local private school and managed the human resource function for over 130 faculty and staff.

Sara has a B.Sc. in Sports and Recreation management from the University of Colorado and recently pursued a Masters degree in Institutional Management and Leadership at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

Sara is married with two sons. In her free time she enjoys a variety of sports/games, reading, volunteering and spending time with friends and family.
